Training for adults

Build capacity before you need it

Functional strength, exercising for health, and honest assessments to stay on track — in your own home, at a studio near you, or online across Scarborough and Durham Region.

Most of my clients are not training for a race. They are training so that they can enjoy the next phase of life, and so an old injury stops dictating the week.

Why start now

Muscle and bone are easier to keep than to rebuild

Most of what makes later life comfortable — strength, balance, how easily you get up off the floor, how well you recover from a bad night — is built long before anybody needs it. The work is foundational and it compounds.

It’s never too late to start or restart. Research shows that adding in consistent training to your weekly routine can add years to your life through reducing illness and disability, even if you start at 50 or 60. Functional training is very different from training to look a certain way (although aesthetic goals can have their place in helping you feel your best). It also means the training does not have to be punishing. It has to be consistent, and it has to be something you will still be doing in ten years.

  • Strength has a long runway. Robustness you build now is what you are relying on later.
  • Risk factors respond to work. Blood pressure, cholesterol, body composition and cardiac fitness all respond to exercise, and they respond faster with a plan than without one.
  • Old injuries are worth closing out. The shoulder you stopped using properly in 2015 is still shaping how you move. Let’s change that together.
  • Consistency beats intensity. A program you can keep doing through a busy quarter is worth more than one you abandon in March.

What training looks like

A program built around you, adjusted as we go

Access to healthful care should be a right, and fitness should be enjoyable. We work together to design a lifestyle fitness program based on your own needs and goals. As we put that plan into practice, we keep adjusting it, so you have a program you are happy with at every step.

Nothing comes off a template. The starting point is your own assessment, not an average, and the plan moves when your life does.

  • A first conversation about your health history, your goals, and what you will realistically keep doing
  • An assessment before any training starts, so we both know the actual starting point
  • Sessions that fit the week you have, not the week you wish you had
  • Reassessment at sensible intervals, so progress is measured rather than assumed

What we work on

Five areas, mixed to suit you

  • Strength and conditioning

Progressive resistance training built around the movements that carry over into real life. Loads chosen for where you are now, not where a program says you should be.

  • Aerobic fitness

Conditioning planned from a measured starting point rather than a guess, and built so it fits the body (and knees!) you have, alongside the strength work instead of fighting it.

  • Mobility and injury history

Working through ageing joints and old injuries that quietly limit everything else. Where it needs a physiotherapist first, I will say so. Multidisciplinary care is good care.

  • Risk factor management

Training aimed at the things you and your doctor would rather see move — body composition, cardiovascular health, and the health markers that come with a family history.

  • Nutritional guidance

General, practical guidance on eating to support your training. Where a detailed plan is wanted, I can bring in a dietitian.

What is exercise physiology?

Exercise physiology is the science of how the body and its systems respond to activity. It’s how those systems change related to activity over time. Like how your body manages cholesterol or sugar. I use it to set your training at a level that is useful today and still moves you forward.

Testing and assessment

Numbers first, so progress is measured rather than assumed

We don’t have to hang on the numbers, but in the background or together, we’ll keep good measurements of progress while you experience what those changes feel like in your day to day life. Cardio testing, body composition and fitness assessment are a regular part of my week in executive health and clinical settings, and the same tools are available in home programs.

An assessment is a session of its own. You get the measurements, the interpretation, and a plain explanation of what each one does and does not tell you — written up afterwards, so it is yours to keep and to share with your doctor if you want to.

What a full assessment may cover

  • Body composition analysis
  • Waist circumference
  • Functional movement screen
  • Strength testing
  • Back fitness
  • Flexibility testing
  • Aerobic and cardio testing
  • Lifestyle and sedentary behaviour
  • Nutrition education
  • Guided goal setting

An assessment is not a medical examination and it does not diagnose anything. If something in the results should be looked at by a doctor, I will tell you so plainly and put it in writing.

Where we train

You do not need a gym membership

  • In your home

I bring the equipment. No long commute on either side of the session, which is usually what kills a routine. Across Scarborough and Durham Region.

  • At a studio near you

Private studio space can be arranged close to your home or office, for a small additional fee.

  • Online, from anywhere

Live virtual sessions, including while you are travelling for work. I will fit session times to your timezone, and send light packable equipment with you.

Towns I travel to

In-home sessions across Scarborough and the Durham lakeshore: Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa. If you are a little outside that, call and ask — it can often be arranged. Online training reaches anywhere in Canada.

Training is available per session or as a package of sessions, depending on how often you want to train and how much flexibility you need. Shorter sessions are available for weeks that will not hold a full hour. We work out which one fits at the consultation.
