Training for older adults
Personal training for seniors in Scarborough and Durham Region
Training that keeps you doing what you love — in your own home, at a studio near you, or online from anywhere.
I work with older adults, and with families arranging training for a parent or elder. We go at your pace, and the plan changes as you do.
Looking for yourself rather than a parent, and not thinking of yourself as an older adult yet? The other page is probably the better fit.

A program built around you, adjusted as we go
Access to healthful care should be a right, and fitness should be enjoyable. We work together to design a lifestyle fitness program based on your own needs and goals. As we put that plan into practice, we keep adjusting it, so you have a program you are happy with at every step.
Nothing is rushed, and nothing comes off a template. If something hurts, we change it. If something is working, we build on it.
- A first conversation about your health history, what you want, and what you enjoy
- An assessment before any training starts, so the starting point is yours and not an average
- Sessions at a pace that suits you, with equipment provided
- Regular check-ins, and changes to the plan whenever your circumstances change
What we work on
Five areas, mixed to suit you
-
Healthy aging and balance
Strength and steadiness on your feet — the work most people mean when they ask about preventing falls. So stairs, groceries and getting up off the floor stay manageable.
-
Chronic disease and risk management
Training planned to support a condition you already live with, either before you need medication or in addition to it, or around the risk factors you and your doctor want to work on. We can’t always avoid medications, but better sleep, less stress and a stronger body all help them work their best.
-
Mobility and flexibility
Range of movement in the joints you use most, worked on gently and steadily rather than forced. When it comes to stretching, no pain, just gain.
-
Resistance training
Building and holding on to muscle, helping it successfully adapt to the natural changes that age brings. Resistance training that matters more with every passing decade, using loads chosen for where you are now.
-
Nutritional guidance
General, practical guidance on eating to support your training. Where a detailed plan is wanted, I can bring in a dietitian.
What is exercise physiology?
Exercise physiology is the science of how the body and its systems respond to activity. It’s how those systems change related to activity over time. Like how your body manages cholesterol or sugar. I use it to set your training at a level that is safe for you today and still moves you forward.
Where we train
You do not need a gym membership
-
In your home
I bring the equipment. No travel, no parking, no stairs you would rather not do twice. Across Scarborough and Durham Region.
-
At a studio near you
Private studio space can be arranged close to your home, for a small additional fee.
-
Online, from anywhere
Live virtual sessions, including while you are travelling. I will fit session times to your timezone, and send light packable equipment with you.
Towns I travel to
In-home sessions across Scarborough and the Durham lakeshore: Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa. If you are a little outside that, call and ask — it can often be arranged. Online training reaches anywhere in Canada.
Training with a health condition
Exercise therapy alongside your health team
Many people come to me already living with something. That is normal, and it is planned for rather than worked around.
A program can be designed and adjusted to work with the considerations that come with a long-term condition. We work on things like heart and lung fitness, metabolic function, muscle functionality, flexibility and everyday movement, and I watch how you respond as we go and adjust as needed.
Conditions that may be suited to exercise therapy
- Cardiovascular disease
- Metabolic disorders
- Cancer
- Arthritis
- Stroke
- Low back pain
- Osteoporosis
- Respiratory disease
- Cognitive and psychological conditions
- Spinal cord injury
Training is not always a stand-alone treatment, and it never replaces care from your doctor or other healthcare professionals. I work alongside your health team, not instead of it, and I will ask at our first conversation who else is involved in your care.
For adult children
Arranging training for a parent or elder
A lot of my inquiries come from family members rather than from the person who will be training. That’s a good way to start, and you’re welcome to be as involved as everyone is comfortable with.
- Start with a phone call. Consultations are free and no obligation. It’s the best way to know if we’re a good fit before you commit.
- Your elder decides. Nothing begins without their agreement, and they can stop at any point.
- You can sit in on the first conversation, on an assessment, or on sessions — whatever the elder in your life is comfortable with.
- You will know how it’s going, with their permission.
- Training comes to them. No driving to a gym and no gym equipment to buy.
